about

Last summer, 2013, I reemersed myself in music theory and all it's various trappings. I found myself in a diatonic rut and I wanted to pull out of it in my playing and recording. I listened to a lot of Bach, Chopin and Debussy, and read a lot of Schoenberg's books on musical composition and harmony. I studied up on modulation, chromatic mediants, tritone substitutions, and other ways of generating some chromaticism. I worked out of various music books on composition and took a greater interest in classic jazz albums. I also started to learn how to play the piano and read music better. This album is an outgrowth of that interest. The vast majority of what you hear was written as a score before being played, recorded, and arranged.

The form of the album kinda follows an ABA format, with the middle poppier, jazz-influenced songs bookended by more formal pieces. All in all, there is a certain quality to this arrangement that I like very much.
